Moab Area Chamber of Commerce
Banquet a Success!

Moab Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual Chamber Banquet on October 24, 2009. It was held at Canyonland's By Night and all who attended enjoyed a wonderful "all you can eat" dutch oven dinner. It was titled "Halloween Harvest Hoedown" with many fun costumes in attendence. The high-light of the event was honoring the Citizen and Business of the Year. Ken Bishoff was chosen by the Chamber as this year's Citizen. He was introduced by Beth McCue and Colin Fryer. Ken is very active in our community. He is on the Grand County Search and Rescue; Treasurer of Arches and Canyonlands National Park Friends Group; Member of Grand County Domestic Violence Coalition; Member of Grand County Homeless Coalition; Volunteer for GCMS Reality Town; Member of Moab City Economic Development Council; Teaches classes for both USU and GCHS; Boy Scouts of American Unit Commissioner and Leader; Volunteer for Seekhaven and Century Tour, as well as, a very active member of his church. These are just a few of the many qualified reasons Moab Area Chamber of Commerce is honored to have Ken Bishoff as their Citizen of the Year 2009.

Moab Area Chamber of Commerce President, Phil Mueller, presented the Business of the Year plaque to Steve Hawks, accepting for Utah State University Moab Center. USU Moab was honored as the Business of the Year after considering the vitality and sustainability it brings to our community.

Enrollment is at a 15 year high with a 48% increase from the previous Fall semester. USU has partnered with Grand County School District to provide seamless educational opportunities for adults in our community. USU also offers GED and ACT testing. USU is working with Allen Memorial Hospital to bring a nursing degree program to our community and is in negotiations with the hospital to build a clinical nursing and CNA training lab in the new hospital.

In addition, discussions are underway to determine if the old Allen Memorial Hospital can serve as student housing for future USU students. With the many exciting things in the near future for Utah State University Moab Center, Moab Area Chamber of Commerce are honored to have them as our Business of the Year.

The Chamber would also like to thank the many businesses for their generous donations for our silent auction. Without you, our banquet couldn't be a success!

July 4th

"Enjoy The Crunch" is the theme for this year's 4th of July Celebration in Swanny City Park! In these times of economic "Crunch" you are invited to "Enjoy the Crunch" at our annual 4th of July celebration sponsored by the Moab Area Chamber of Commerce. Come "crunch" on juicy watermelon during our FREE watermelon eating contest, fresh popcorn and many other "crunchy" treats! We have opened up to vendors this year which gives them another opportunity to showcase their items here in Moab. . We have community bands, dancers and cheer groups who will be performing throughout the afternoon of the 4th. The dunk tank will be there as a fund-raiser for GCHS Football. Come dunk your favorite local celebrity and help the football team raise some much needed funding at the same time! We will also have the bounce house as a vendor this year! With these and several Chamber sponsored FREE game booths such as balloon darts, ring toss, bean bag throw and fish pond, it promises to be lots of fun!

THE OPENING OF THIS YEAR'S 4th OF JULY FESTIVITIES AT SWANNY CITY PARK WILL BE THE ANNUAL PARADE, lead by "Old Glory". Boy Scout Troop #803 will do the honor of bringing the parade to the park and posting the colors on the pavillion. EVERYONE IS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE in the parade. THE PARADE WILL START AT JIMBO’S MARKET AT 400 North and 500 West AND ENDS AT TURNER LUMBER. THIS IS A SHORT WALK DESIGNED SO EVERYONE CAN JOIN US. YOU ARE WELCOME TO WALK, RIDE A BIKE, MOTORCYCLE, UNICYCLE, DOG-SLED, FLOAT, OR DECORATED VEHICLE OF ANY KIND. WE ESPECIALLY INVITE OUR SCHOOL CHILDREN TO DECORATE THEIR BICYCLES, SCOOTERS, SKATEBOARDS OR WHATEVER AND FEEL THE SPIRIT OF PATRIOTISM THAT BUILDS AS THE PARADE STARTS AND HEADS UP 400 NORTH TO THE FESTIVITIES AT THE PARK. ALL ORGANIZATIONS, CLUBS AND BUSINESSES ARE WELCOME. The parade will start promptly at 4:30 and we ask everyone to be at the starting point no later than 4:00.

THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE, AND SINGLES, FAMILIES AND SMALL GROUPS DO NOT NEED TO SIGN UP IN ADVANCE. HOWEVER, LARGE GROUPS OR SPECIALIZED GROUPS (SUCH AS BANDS, HORSE GROUPS OR GROUPS NEEDING TO PLAY MUSIC) OR THOSE WITH SPECIAL REQUESTS SHOULD CONTACT JIM THUESEN AT 260-1710 or jimthuesen@frontiernet.net.

THE END OF THE PARADE AT SWANNY CITY PARK ANNOUNCES THE BEGINNING OF THE FESTIVITIES. The Star Spangled Banner will be sung by Zhailaa Rei, accompanied by her husband, Denis Zwang. Mayor Dave will give the Welcome Address and Moab's own Valley Voices are slated to sing a patriotic tribute. DJ, Dirk Phillips, will keep the activities moving. It will all have the FEEL OF AN OLD-TIME COUNTRY FESTIVAL. AS NIGHT FALLS BE READY FOR THE fantastic FIREWORKS DISPLAY sponsored by Grand County and the City of Moab. A big thank you goes out to our volunteer fire department who put this show on every year!
